Extended CFP: Fantasy Illustration: The Arts Reforged

Paper submissions are invited for a proposed panel on Fantasy Illustration which I will be organising and submitting for selection to the Once and Future Fantasies Conference.

The conference takes place on 13 - 17 July 2022 and is organised by the Centre for Fantasy and the Fantastic (CFF) at the University of Glasgow. It is co-sponsored by the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts (IAFA)

The proposed panel will consist of three 20 minute papers under the following theme:

Fantasy Illustration: The Arts Reforged

Fantasy illustration has always taken inspiration from the wider world of the visual arts: reflecting its formal properties and iconographical modes and absorbing and refining many of its image-making processes. Contemporary exponents of the genre acknowledge this interaction visually whilst also seeking to reinvigorate and repurpose their shared imagery through the creation of diverse illustrative forms that transcend traditional constraints of subject matter and style. This session welcomes papers which explore both the pictorial and technical connections between fantasy illustration and the visual arts and the strategies employed by individual illustrators in the manufacturing of new, hybridised mythologies.

To submit, please send a 200-300 word abstract and a short bio (maximum 100 words) to joel.merriner@plymouth.ac.uk

Deadline for submissions is the 1st October 2021.

I invite submissions from researchers, artistic practitioners and fans alike. I particularly encourage papers exploring lesser known branches of the fantasy illustration genre and/or underrepresented illustrators.

Please note:
This is a panel proposal. I will be selecting the three papers which will then be submitted to the Once and Future Fantasies Committee for possible selection to the Conference.
